AWS Database Migration Service (DMS)
AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) is a managed service that facilitates fast, secure database migrations to AWS, supporting both homogeneous (e.g., Oracle to Oracle) and heterogeneous (e.g., Oracle to PostgreSQL) migrations with minimal downtime. It supports full-load and ongoing CDC (Change Data Capture) replication, often used with the AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT) for complex migrations.
Benefits and Use Cases
- Move database and analytics workloads between different database platforms quickly, securely, and with minimal downtime.
- Provision and run classic replication instances and tasks, serverless replications, or DMS Schema Conversion migration projects, all from one job type.
Example Use Case: "Follow-the-Sun" Regional Cloud Localizations
Dynamically spin up localized AWS DMS tasks that sync specific geographical data fragments to regional cloud centers based on the time of day.
Automic Features
- Start, cancel and monitor an AWS DMS job from a definition and optionally override parameters in the job definition.
- Supports Credential (access key), EC2 instance profile, Assume Role, SAML federation, and OAuth authentication.
- Polls AWS DMS until the resource reaches a genuine terminal state (for example, task stopped, instance available, or data migration LOAD_COMPLETE), with configurable polling and failure intervals.
- Stopping a running job issues the matching AWS stop call and reports the job as TERMINATED, not FAILED.
- Optionally route API calls through a proxy server for network environments that require it.
